DRAWING WORKSHOP

PLAN, SECTION, ELEVATION, 3D (Riva San Vitale House)

Although I have know the uses and definitions of Plan, Section, Elevation of buildings since the beginning of learning architecture, but more specific definitions were given and showed me advantages of drawing with hand over using computer programs like CAD. I have always used CAD and felt it very hard to work with hand. There is so much precision required that my hand does not like. I have always liked skectching but drafting with hand I did not like to do. But through this course I have understood that hand drafting does not have to be boring, and just the basic plans, but we can add backgrounds and make it look more catchy and interesting. Although I didnt make very unique drawings, but through looking at what the class has done, it has shown what can be produced. My drawings focused on the detail of shading, and the different levels of the building. But I feel I could have made it much more interesting and unique. But then again I will never underestimate the amount of time needed to finish these hand drawings, it took alot longer than I had expected.

Then again there are the painful perspective drawings in which I have not done very well. Through this rotation, I was able to learn and practice my perspective drawing and the additions of people on the horizon line and backgrounds to enhance the drawings. Also I learned of the usefulness and advantages of using tracing paper as well as the terrible smudges that can occur on them, especially when shading in them. Spacing and shading are very important to these drawing presentations, and I feel I have learned alot through just a few weeks. In the future I can use this knowledge on future project technical drawings.

MATERIAL MODELLING

TRANSFORMED MODEL (using linear distortion and continuous folding)

Through understanding the use of transformations of models, I was able to change the original model into something very different, keeping the upper space of the model and the window, but adding a courtyard space using the linear distortion, adding special walls. It was confusing to make at first but I got myself organised and got use to connecting the slices together. Although the roof may not seem to fit, but I wanted something that curved and was translucent. So this wire mesh was the best material I found. It was lots of fun experimenting with new materials.

Through this rotation, making cubes, workable scissors, my own home model, and duplicating someone else's model, I have learned alot of new modelling skills in which I have not known before. Now that I know these little tricks, I believe it will help with future models.

FLUID THOUGHTS

Through this first rotation, I have enhanced my drawing skills and shading skills, different points of view and different types and ways of drawing. It has been a very interesting course for there was alot of freedom on what we could do, and was not too much to do. This made it lots of fun, and I have learned alot about the movement and fluidity and their importance in drawings. This will help me in future drawings in architecture. (esp. ones in which we have alot of freedom)

COLLABORATION WORK

Again, we were to combine our drawings, and it was a lot of fun, drawing on sheet, then combining into another drawing through line extensions. Very unpredicable, but came out with a real nice effect. The other one in which we ripped apart used voids and white paper to enhance the artwork.

OPERA HOUSE USING STRAIGHT LINES

The editing of the Opera house was very interesting for I was able to imagine the Opera house in another dimension and produce something that looks very futuristic but yet still recognisable.

COLLABORATION 1

At first this was very confusing and I was not use to ripping my drawings apart and producing something new. But through this technique I was able to produce a new shape for our paper.

OPERA HOUSE

It was alot of fun going to the Opera House and drawing from there. It was interesting how the views in which we drew were all unique and very interesting. Through this excersise I was able to work on my drawing skills and shading skills.

EAST BEACH CAFE - Littlehampton, West Sussex - Heatherwick studio

Through reseaching online, I was reminded of this unique cafe that used layering of rocks to blend into the nature of the site. Similar to the Opera house, it shows organic beauty and the many fantasies in which architecture can produce.

WEEK 1 COLLAGE/SKETCH

In this week we were told to make a collage using magazines and other papers. It was very interesting and fun. There was alot of freedom, and we got to use sticks to draw the sketch. I am not spectactually good at drawing so it was a bit of work.

CHOSEN ARTWORKS:

"FORCE" by Justin Ashbee
The organic drawing look like contours all over the space and is very interesting on the eyes. It plays with our eyes and is beautiful.
"ORGANIC ATMOSPHERE" by Paul Schlereth

This drawing is very unique for it shows organic beauty in which the opera house has done. This is a little different due to the natural elements that have been combined together to produce a real interesting effect.

UTZON'S SKETCHES
Through researching the designer of the Opera House I was able to understand elements of his design and the ways in which he sketches and designs.
